Say Gay, Florida?

The State of Florida sparked the “Say Gay” movement. Giant billboards have popped up all over the state of Florida–up and down I-75 as tourists make their way through the Sunshine State. Even smaller cities in rural counties have received prominent features. Highway signs range with some that simply state “SAY GAY” in a black and white graphic type format. Others have expressed all their inner shine with creative signs, which highlight that fun, Florida style we all know and love. This bill strikes despite Florida’s well-known features of South Beach fairylands, a gay hub that is The Keys, and hoards of LGBTQ+ tourism hot spots up and down the state – from Pensacola to GayBor or Gulfport to Key West. Still, Florida remains a state entrenched in the battle of culture and history. God fearing Florida born residents commingle with an influx of urban transplants. The former strive to protect Old Florida, a mystical rainforest long gone but equally plagued by discrimination from the beginning. The latter–all them New Yorkers, Bible belt bumpkins, and such–seek the joys of Florida’s coastal life without the social judgment of their past lives. Those in between, which is the majority, fall “purple” or neutral in more extreme categories including gay rights, bodily autonomy, the death penalty, Local gays and allies can organise alongside Equality Florida in many ways. We can also all vote for supportive candidates, donate to supportive organisations, and ensure our teachers and students have safe haven. Most importantly, we can continue to research the impact of sexual identity regulations in our public school system and society. More creatively, we can join local Florida-based artists like Chizy in some satire of the matter (Source: Creative Loafing, Chizzy) Together, we can protect the future of Florida’s next generation and LGBTQ communities. A portion of all proceeds of She Worthy Original & Custom Art will be donated to these efforts. Please reach out to collaborate with us and support the cause!
