Paddling the Cotee

Paddling the Cotee

Paddling the Cotee Every few months we realise we simply don’t paddle enough. We love to cut Friday meetings short for a brisk paddle down the Cotee River in New Port Richey. It’s so easy with many access points and a long route to better traverse the upper river area, leading out through the channel to the open ocean. We recommend plenty of sunscreen, water, and snacks. However, there are several areas to stop along the way, including potty breaks. We highly recommend launching from Jasmine Park as a midway point, south into Downtown New Port Richey or north west to Durney Key. If you go into Downtown, you’ll pass many beautiful properties, and even a few dinosaurs… There’s often a chance to see tropical and migratory birds. In the off chance that you get lucky, you may paddle alongside a herd of manatee or pod of dolphins. We have seen some gators further up river but last year one made it all the way to Durney Key. Make a day of it and explore Sims Park, The Hacienda, several delis, shops and more downtown. Turn around towards the gulf and hit up The Nauti Oar or the Crab Shack on the River for some cheers. Take some time to float below the Spanish moss but keep an eye out for boats and docks. They sneak up on ya!
